CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Project X Department, Zelle Corp, Manhattan, New York, United States

Sherlock Holmes and King Rudolf didn’t have the lab space to themselves, but it appeared it was mostly low-level technicians who were bustling around. Some looked up from their workstations when the pair entered, but most didn’t pay them any notice. Sherlock observed these were abused employees. Ones who were often threatened. Yelled at. Told to work at the expense of their health, well-being, and all else.

“Okay, I’ll take this computer terminal,” Rudolf mouthed to Sherlock, pulling out the USB key drive that Faraday had given them.

Sherlock’s gaze darted to the name over the station, and he knew immediately why the fae had chosen it. The placard over the standing desk read: Dr. Marty Dupree.

That was the head scientist Dr. Jessie Raven had told Paris about who championed Project X. He was also in the meeting with Jackson Zelle, which meant he wouldn’t need his computer, which was probably more powerful than most in the lab and had the most access.

Sherlock glanced at the clear glass door leading to the hallway. They didn’t have much time. If Dr. Dupree showed up to find Rudolf at his station, explaining would be difficult, although Sherlock thought the fae could come up with a clever enough reason.

Sherlock looked around the space with a cautionary glance as Rudolf got to work, half working as a lookout. Using that impressive sleight of hand again, Rudolf slid the USB key drive into the computer without anyone noticing.

Sherlock scanned the area around them, trying to decide where the best place to look for clues would be. The place was full of scientists working on projects with their heads down. More interesting were all the strange robotic parts strewn around the large space. It was like an android junkyard.

They’d learned that Paris had successfully put a halt to public and worldwide sales of the Ro-Panions. That was a start. However, Sherlock knew Faraday needed inside information to shut down the robots already out in the market. The detective’s job needed to be to find Terrance.

His eyes continued to search the large department space for a clue. Anything out of the ordinary. Again, he knew the whereabouts of the hostage wouldn’t be in the open. What other people missed was what made Sherlock a great detective. He saw just that—what was missing.

His gaze landed on an area on the side of the robotic lab. It was empty, whereas the rest of the space was crammed with machines and workspaces. The floor was scuffed, as though equipment had been moved from that spot quite recently.

In the abandoned area was a stack of filing boxes. Nonchalantly, like he was no one of particular interest, Sherlock made his way over to the tower of files. He was an expert at going undetected, knowing how to move in a way that people didn’t take notice of. Most people moved in a way that demanded attention. Most people wanted attention. Or they were lost, and that usually got them noticed.
